Sushma Swaraj raised issue of terrorism and H-1B with Rex Tillerson

Sushma Swaraj and  Rex Tillerson gathered in New York on the sidelines of UN General Assembly session. They also conversed spiralling of the US-India political and economic affiliation. The meeting also comes forward of the visit of Defence Secretary Jim Mattis to India following week.

Sushma Swaraj with Tillerson strongly raised the issue of terrorism and H1-B visa, the most required by Indian IT professionals. The Trump management is presently reviewing the H-1B visa policy. It thinks that the visa distortes by companies to swap American workers.

There was no sign of Tillerson’s reply to  Sushma Swaraj on the H-1B issue. The state department readout of their meeting supposed they looked forward to assembling the new “2 plus 2” meeting.

It will be of the foreign and defence ministers of the both countries and the imminent Global Entrepreneurship Summit.

Officials supposed throughout the meeting, the two leaders also converses a broad range of bilateral issues. It counts the situation in the neighbourhood plus the Indo-Asia Pacific region.

This was the first highest-level meeting amid the leaders of the two countries since June. At that time  Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with President  Donald Trump.

They also discuss the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, i.e. DACA policy. Donald Trump this month scrapped a reprieve programme that approved work permits to immigrants who arrived in the country unlawfully as children. The move can blow 800,000 undocumented workers counting thousands of Indian- Americans.

H-1Bs are essential to the business model of apex Indian IT companies operating in the US. Similar to  Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services, and Wipro companies, which stand to endure significantly if the programme is truncated or redesigned.

These groups are in the crosshairs of the White House. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was likely to raise the topic at his conference with Trump in June, but it did not come up. Both sides had seemed eager to get the connection off to a good start. This was the foremost meeting of the two leaders.

The largest country explicit receivers of H-1Bs are Indians. Counting for almost 70% of all visas issued under this category in 2014, though Indian IT companies employed none. Several Indians are employed by US companies like Facebook, Google, and Microsoft who back the plan.
