Tom Schaar started competing at X Games at age 12 and made history by landing the first 1080 aerial in competition. The Malibu native clinched his first gold medal at age 14 in the Big Air discipline and has since evolved into an all-around skateboarding powerhouse. With 11 X Games medals and many podium wins in marquee contests such as the Vans Pool Party and the World Skate Argentina to his name, this Team USA skateboarder keeps pushing the boundaries of vertical skateboarding. Schaar is joined in the studio by Arizonian ripper Liam Pace, who caused an upset at X Games 2021 by winning the Skateboard Park discipline as an unknown rookie. Since then, Pace has cemented himself on the global scene and continues to gun for podium spots at competitions across the globe. Find out what the return of Summer X Games in front of live crowds means for these two bona fide rippers – only on UNLEASHED.
Hear the inside story in conversation with the three podcast hosts, Australian action sports personality Luke “The Dingo” Trembath, professional snowboarder Danny Kass, as well as an artist, model, and UFC ambassador Brittney Palmer. Tune in right here.
Schaar made one of the most impactful debuts in skateboarding when he became the world’s first rider to land a 1080 aerial at age 12 on a Mega Ramp. After specializing in Big Air at X Games for several years, his talent grew wings as he explored other styles of skateboarding. “I really like skating everything. As a kid, I grew up mostly skating vert, but I’ve been moving over more into park because there are so many more lines and options. And right now, I’ve been moving back to vert and having fun. So I feel like a kid again,” said Schaar on UNLEASHED.
As a halfpipe competitor, Schaar rose to the podium in second place in Skate Vert at X Games Chiba 2023 and is excited about the resurgence of the discipline: “I see more kids skating vert at skateparks. There will be twenty kids skating vert sometimes. When I was growing up, it would be me and my friend, and that was it. So I think it is coming back, hopefully.”
Asked about his strategy for his Skateboard Vert run at X Games California, Schaar revealed: “You can’t really have any filler tricks. You have to have something back to back to back!”
For Pace, vert skating and pool were always the focus growing up in the concrete parks of Arizona. He first entered the spotlight by winning the Next X Park amateur contest in Minneapolis in 2018 and spent years in the Monster Army support program. “I saw Monster Army for the first time when I was really little in Tucson, watching all my friends on bikes. Just getting chances at contests when I was on Monster Army was huge. And a little over a year ago, I made it to Monster Energy,” said Pace on UNLEASHED.
The big breakthrough moment arrived for Pace at X Games 2021 when the event was contested at private facilities. Ripping the California Training Facility like no other, Pace achieved the rare feat of winning X Games gold in his X Games debut. “I definitely had never seen a check that big before. That entire day felt not real. I was kind of out of it after that whole thing. The contest was super close to my house, too, and I walked away with an X Games gold medal,” said Pace.
Since then, Pace has followed up with wins at high-profile contests such as Simple Session 2022 in Estonia and resides in Oceanside, California, deeply immersed in the culture: “I tend to skate everywhere. I grew up with two skateparks, so being in California, where I can hit fifty different skateparks just an hour away, I basically want to go out on a mission every single day!”
